FAQs

Quick Answers

What do I need to start a trucking company?

It depends on your operation, but most new carriers deal with business registration, a USDOT number, operating authority, a BOC-3 filing, UCR, and — depending on weight and routes — IFTA, IRP, Form 2290, and state permits. We review your plans and tell you which apply.

Do I need both a USDOT number and operating authority?

Many interstate for-hire carriers need both, but not every operation does. It depends on what you haul, whether you cross state lines, and whether you are for-hire or private.

What is a BOC-3 filing?

A BOC-3 designates a process agent in each state where you are authorized to operate. It is generally required before for-hire operating authority becomes active.

What is UCR?

Unified Carrier Registration is an annual registration program for carriers operating in interstate commerce. Fees are typically based on fleet size.

When do I need IFTA?

IFTA generally applies to qualified motor vehicles operating in more than one member jurisdiction, and covers fuel tax reporting through quarterly filings.

What is IRP?

The International Registration Plan is apportioned plate registration for vehicles traveling in multiple jurisdictions, with fees based on miles run in each.

What is Form 2290?

Form 2290 is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax return filed with the IRS for qualifying heavy vehicles. The stamped Schedule 1 is often required for registration.

Which state permits do I need?

That depends on where you travel. States such as New Mexico, Kentucky, New York, Oregon, and Connecticut have their own weight-distance or highway-use requirements.

Can Ingenious Industry complete all my permits?

We handle a wide range of trucking permits, registrations, and tax filings. After reviewing your operation we confirm which services we can process for you.

How long does the process take?

Timelines vary by service and depend on government processing, which we do not control. We prepare and submit filings promptly and keep you updated.

Can you help Spanish-speaking business owners?

Yes. Our team provides support in English and Spanish.

Can you help an existing trucking company?

Yes. We work with active carriers on renewals, state permits, IFTA and IRP filings, Form 2290, UCR, and MCS-150 updates.
